Starting August 1, Interpreter Education Online Offers More Educational Packages

Posted by Interpreter Education Online on July 16, 2010

More than a year has passed since Interpreter Education Online opened the doors of its virtual school to aspiring and practicing legal interpreters. Working with our wonderful students is an exciting and exhilarating experience, and a bit of a learning curve. One of the lessons we have learned is that when it comes to professional training and education, one size does not fit all. Each language professional has unique educational needs, scheduling challenges and allocation of funds to work with.

To better serve our current and future students, the IEO team has developed new educational packages that will come in effect on August 1st of this year. The Advanced and the Basic Courses for Court Interpreters, our two most popular programs, will be offered in a variety of formats. Students will be able to choose among the following packages:

- Materials Only
- Materials Only + Interpretation Performance Assessment Test
- Materials Only + Interpretation Performance Assessment Test + the desired amount of glossaries and interpretation exercises evaluated by instructors

In addition to expanding the selection of training options, the new system will allow us to open our programs in more language-combinations adding to the existing assortment of 11 language combinations.

    Dear Sergiu,

Only the Administrative Office of the Court can certified an interpreter. To my knowledge, Massachusetts doesn’t require the interpreters to pass a certification examination. You will find more information regarding the Massachusetts Court Interpreters program at this link: http://www.mass.gov/courts/admin/planning/interpreters.html.

After completion of our course, you will receive a certificate of completion. Our training program will train you to become a professional interpreter, and will prepare you for a certification examination.

We do not have a Romanian instructor at this time. But our Advanced Course can be purchased with the option Materials Only. What it means is that you will receive all the course materials but you will not have an instructor to correct your work (glossaries, interpretation exercises…).

You start the course 2 weeks after your registration. Our course requires to work a couple of hours each day at least. This course will be an excellent addition to you legal studies, if you have time to put into it.

Please let me know if you have an other questions. I would be happy to answer you!

Is this program recognized by all States and will it prepare me for the Consortium exam?

I am interested in working in the State of Florida as a Professional Court Interpreter. I am fluent in both English and Spanish and I am currently a Spanish teacher with 6 years of experience. I realize that I need to pass the Fl Consortium exam and have 2 years of court or legal related experience for this job.

  4. Interpreter Education Online says:

    Dear Marcela,

We have been recognized by many State Court Administration Offices as Court Interpreters Continuing Education Units provider, including by the State of Florida. Here is the link of the Florida Courts website on which we are listed: http://www.flcourts.org/gen_public/interpret/bin/CIEApprovedPrograms.pdf.

Our Advanced course is a comprehensive course for anyone aiming to prepare for a certification examination such as the Consortium exam and to become a professional court interpreter. In this course, you will get an in-depth look in the U.S. Legal System, the criminal procedures, the Court Interpreters Codes of Ethics. You will also learn about special topics such as controlled substances, Traffic and Vehicular Accidents… For each chapters in all of those topics (legal concepts, criminal procedures, special topics…), the students are required to translate glossaries to improve their knowledge of legal terminology.
An important portion of the course is dedicated to improve your interpreting skills in the 3 modes of interpretation in legal settings. You will find chapters on the theory of interpretation as well as many exercises on which you can practice.

The language-specific instructor will correct your exercises as well as the glossaries. The language-neutral instructor will answer your questions related to legal concepts and ideas, and will correct your essays on Ethics.

Please let me know if you would like more information or if you have any other questions I could address.

Thank you and I am looking forward to counting you among our students.
